Are Paraben Free Skin Care Products Safer

By Marcie Raymond

Parabens are a series of preservatives that are added to cosmetics to give their products a longer shelf life. There are no major cosmetic companies that make or sell paraben free skin care products. You will find that virtually every face cream, lotion, bath soap and deodorant contain parabens in at least one, but usually three or four forms.

These chemicals come under many different names but most will end with "ben". If you read the labels provided with your deodorants, soaps and face creams you may find several different strains of this chemical. Testing of this substance has shown that in face creams, when exposed to ultra-violet rays it actually causes your skin to age faster. This is the exact opposite of what it is supposed to be doing.

In studies of tumors taken from breast cancer victims more than eighty percent of studied tumors contained parabens in their makeup. The tumors in the participants were also found to be very near the under arm area of victims. These findings have lead to the conclusion that underarm deodorants are suspect as part of the source of the chemicals found in the tumors.

The components that make up parabens are known to copy estrogen in the body. Given this knowledge and the knowledge that estrogen can cause breast cancer and interfere with the normal levels of hormones in people there is a risk taken each time you use products containing these ingredients.

Infants are exposed to this chemical too. There are infant oils and soaps and shampoos that contain these preservatives. A person can easily absorb over five pounds of these chemicals over their lifetime because they are exposed daily to them.

Consider that most women have been putting these creams and oils on their faces and bodies minimally twice a day for most of their lives. This number is probably much higher because soaps and make up contain them also. When using that much of a product it is to your advantage to be certain that the ingredients are safe to use. Manufacturers do not have to prove to the USDA that these preservatives are truly safe and will continue to use them until consumers force them to stop.

The goal here would be to make sure the producer has the consumers' best interests at heart when he puts a product on the market. We as a nation can change how large corporations do business by not purchasing their merchandise until they change formulas and make them safer. Unfortunately, the truth is that the only way, at this point, to be certain there are no parabens in our personal items is to purchase only items that have been made without them.

Paraben free skin care products are easily found on the internet. There are several companies that carry a full line of beauty products for sale. These items are advertised as having absolutely no parabens in their formulas and one hundred percent safe for children as well as adults. As a conscientious adult it makes sense to not purchase things that may be dangerous even if it is far in the future. It would be to your advantage to purchase items that do not contain these chemicals until it has been shown that they are proven to be safe.
